ABOAKYER FESTIVAL

The Aboakyer festival is observed by the people of Winneba every year, during the first week of May. The festival is a celebration to honour "Otu", the god who guided them on their migration from the ancient western Sudan Empire to their current location (Winneba). A Bushbuck is captured and offered to "Otu" as a sacrifice in exchange for safety and guidance. During the festival, the streets of Winneba is crowded with people wearing colourful costumes, singing, and dancing.
